first thing that strikes you on arrival at Portnellan is the fantastic view from The Old Farmhouse.","body":"The ever-changing scenery encompassing Loch Lomond (only 200 yards away) with a backdrop of hills and mountains, including majestic Ben Lomond itself, is quite breath-taking. \n\r\nYou can be assured of the warmest of welcomes on arrival together with a sumptuous and delicious âwelcome packâ, including a loaf of Davidâs home-baked bread and pancakes, home-made jam, Scottish oatcakes and a wee dram of local whisky! The Old Farmhouse is extremely well-equipped and comfortable throughout; our super-king bed with crisp linen ensured a good nightâs sleep, but we could hardly wait to be waking up to THAT view every morning!\n\r\nPortnellan is a working organic beef farm and so you may see cattle in the yard behind the farmhouse and David and Freda (often accompanied by their two friendly dogs) about the place. It is also worth pointing out that Portnellan is somewhat remote being a couple of miles from the nearest main road; a real plus for us as it is beautifully quiet and the night sky away from all light pollution is something to behold on a clear night. A farm walk with David gives you a fascinating insight into what Portnellan Farm means to them. Donât forget to pack your âwelliesâ!\n\r\nOne, if not THE, highlight of our week was a two hour speedboat trip with Chris. Such a memorable experience and Chris is a brilliant guide with a vast knowledge of the loch; the history, topography and wildlife as well as what each of the islands on the Loch has to offer. We have, therefore, stayed in some beautiful holiday homes over the years. However, we all agree (yes the kids too!) that The Old Farm House has to be \"the icing on the cake\" - it really is the most amazing property we've ever stayed in: the house was so beautifully presented, so immaculately clean and better equipped than we could ever have imagined. The website has some superb photos of the house and its interior so there's no need to go on too much about the individual rooms other than EVERY room is fab - the kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms etc. The lovely owners, Freda and David Scott-Parks, have really thought of everything when designing the house and have so obviously gone out of their way to make their guests visit as perfect as can be. The house is very quietly located, and has a fully equipped kitchen-dining area, it has three spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms. On our arrival we were welcomed by Chris, the son of the house. David, Chris and Freda (our hosts, and hostess), are incredibly sweet and friendly people. The terrace at the front of the house, is wonderful to enjoy a sunset.\r\nThe cottage is a good base for a city visit to Glasgow or Stirling. There is also no lack of hiking opportunities: Ben Lomond, The Whangie, Conic Hill, Primrose Hill (Loch katrine), Aberfoyle (queen elizabeth forest park).....\r\nA trip on the speedboat of Chris is an absolute must. We even used his services twice. Once to take us to Rowardennan for the start of a hike. And a second time to observe a beautiful sunset from the lake. Chris is an excellent boater, and has an enormous knowledge of the history, culture and the fauna and flora of Loch Lomond and the islands.\r\nIn this house, you can really enjoy and relax.This holiday cottage is highly recommended. Easy to make your own, very workable kitchen. \r\nExcellent communication. The property is easy to find using info given and it is clear on the âmapsâ app. The road in from the village takes a few minutes and is single track, our vehicles managed no problem. Welcome basket was very thoughtful, jam was delicious, bread got eaten very quickly! You also kindly left some gluten free treats for the coeliacs in our party. The views from the cottage were amazing and you could watch the day and the weather across the loch and the mountains. We had glorious autumnal weather and an amazing show of the northern lights one evening, very special. We cooked for ourselves each evening and sampled some of the organic beef from the farm. We enjoyed the minced beef, lorne sausage and sausages. It was absolutely delicious and cooked well. We spent the whole week in close proximity to the farm venturing to Balloch, Luss, Balmaha climbing Ben Lomond and Conic Hill. The facilities at the farm to use the loch for water sports, kayaking and paddle boarding etc is all set up with easy access we just never got the chance to use it or have David take us out in his boat.
